Oliver grew up with music. Both parents taught music at the local school, sang in a gospel quartet and in Oliver’s pre-teen years his dad became a Baptist music director while Oliver’s mom started teaching high school English.
Oliver accepted a music scholarship to SOSU in Durant, OK where he majored in music education. During his first semester he decided to abandon teaching and focus on writing and performing original music.
Oliver honed his skills by accepting offers to record at a recording school in Dallas, TX. Students often wouldn’t have a band for their final project and the school would ask Oliver if he had a song ready to record. Oliver said, “Yes” every time and more often than not, would write the song in the back seat on the way to the studio.
In 2007 The Oliver White Group released “Control”, a 12 song album of original material with the exception of “Mountainside” which is a Flaming Lips cover. The songs fall into Blues and Rock genres and they were frequently billed as a Red Dirt band. In 2018 The Oliver White Group released “#OWGSIDE2EP”, an EP with 5 original songs which range from Americana to Funk.
Oliver is still recording original material and always looking for new ways to approach writing. He also hosts jams and open mics at venues to help build a healthy musical community and provide opportunities for artists become acquainted with one another.
